La lanterne (2017)
La lanterne (2016-2017) is a 30-minute video that considers the concept of interpersonal and institutional gaslighting via a Nouvelle Vague nightmare performed by Stephanie Creaghan and Florence Vallières. The work was created, filmed and produced by the two, and was shown during a series of projections featuring a scent score by Montreal perfume maker LVNEA. The piece was presented at Pangée (Montreal), 811 Gallery (Toronto), and Le Petit Versailles (New York). The work premiered at the Snez tu zabu festival in 2017 (Prague), and was shown in an exhibition format at Gamma Gallery (Montreal) during the same year.
LAVENDER — GRASS — HEAVY CREAM — PISS — BLOOD — DIRT — FEAR;
—It all goes back to the ground.
Riches of the Earth, efflorescent, gilded, processed, overpriced.
It is all churned back into its beginnings.
When you mix all of the colours of the palette you get a murky brown.
When you combine all forms of luxury, just as well, a film of filth reveals itself.
[The golden calf, when milked long enough, eventually produces a sanguine liquid.]
Everything is rot, deep down, and lavish surfaces are made that way to mirror, and, like Narcissus, drawn you in, to drown--
Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
